First-of-Its-Kind: Samsung Introduces Transparent MicroLED Screen at CES 2024
On the eve of CES 2024, Samsung unveiled its much-anticipated annual First Look event, stealing the spotlight with the revelation of the world’s inaugural transparent MicroLED display. While details about its pricing and availability for commercial devices remain undisclosed, Samsung took the opportunity to showcase its groundbreaking creation alongside transparent OLED and transparent LCD models, accentuating the distinctive features of the technology. In a side-by-side comparison, the MicroLED panel not only outshone its counterparts with its superior brightness but also boasted a seamlessly frameless design and a remarkably transparent glass panel, providing a clearer view of objects behind it.
The unveiled transparent micro LED display, hailed by Samsung as a breakthrough, presented a captivating visual effect that is challenging to articulate. The content displayed seemed to defy reality, resembling a hologram suspended in mid-air. The demo unit, standing independently and measuring a mere centimeter in thickness, heightened the illusion of a levitating screen. Furthermore, the high pixel density of micro LEDs contributed to remarkably sharp images. While Samsung has shared only a single vertical video featuring EDM content, it offers a glimpse into the mesmerizing visual experience we encountered:
A representative from Samsung highlighted that transparent MicroLED displays, due to their heightened brightness compared to transparent OLED panels, experience less interference from ambient light.
Despite the impressive technological leap, the drawback lies in the current pricing of Samsung’s non-transparent MicroLED TVs, with a 110-inch model costing a neat $150,000. It appears that it will be a considerable amount of time before these innovative displays become accessible to a broader audience.
Interestingly, Samsung’s South Korean rival, LG, also joined the transparent display showcase at CES this year. LG introduced the OLED T, a wireless transparent OLED TV set to hit the market within the year. Boasting 4K resolution and incorporating LG’s wireless transmission technology for audio and video, the OLED T stands out as the world’s first wireless transparent OLED TV. Building on the success of its non-transparent M3 model from the previous CES, the OLED T features a contrast screen that elegantly rolls down into a base box, offering users the convenience of adjusting its height with a simple press of a button.
